Desperate Housewives Season 2 EP14 causes Chinese concern

Xiaomei, a Chinese girl who was made slave in a US woman’s house, became a controversial character in the popular TV show Desperate Housewives.

For short, this episode has several problems:

1). Story writers are telling people that they know nothing about China, or they do not like China so they set up something like this.

2). This girl is showing some slave personality, so somehow it can be considered a discrimination, racist.

3). Many Chinese people will feel bad after watching this show.

4). As many Americans have very wrong impressions about China, this popular show will help this wrong impression to grow. And it is “abnormal” in a society that has “freedom of speech”.

5). CCTV(China Central TV) is not likely to import season 2 after this episode.

To sum up, Desperate Housewives season 2 episode 14 is a great example of how poor Americans know about China and this situation is going to last for a long time. Also indicates racism and discrimination against Chinese people exist in USA society.

  1. My wife and I are Chinese students in New York. Watching ‘desperate housewives’ has been a must event of our Sunday evening. However we both feel very bad after the character Xiaomei started her debut in this show. It’s a very bad image for Chinese people. The writers are very ignorant or are very hostile to China or Chinese people. Now we still watch the show since other than that I still like the show, but I curse the writers many many times while watching the silly slave Xiaomei on the show.

  2. I dun understand why u guys have to think of Xiaomei as a gal representing the ppl from China. It’s just A character in A show….as simple as that~
When Calos n Gaby tried to adopt the kid that gal even said she didnt like them becoz they r Latin American. What’s that about then?!?!
The writer-Mark is just tryin to tell a story..i PERSONALLY think that it’s very nice of him to put diversity into the show…so u not only get to see White and Black ppl, but also Latin American, Chinese~~
CCTV?Please….I have never watch anything got properly translated on CCTV8…If I were in China now, downloading is my only option when I want to watch American TV shows.

  3. Truth is and problem is, many Americans citizens know much much more about Latin Americans than Chinese.
