Converting PDF for Kindle (DX) on Mac OS X

Just got my Kindle DX.

Kindle DX from Amazon, supposedly has “native” support for PDF, but the support is “experimental” at best. No zoom, no notes, no nothing. Basically you can only read PDF, in portrait or landscape mode. In landscape mode, the text kind of “zoom” a little, but when you scroll down, the pages often won’t align well with the screen. Then you have to rotate back and forth. This is really annoying.

People on PC/Windows have been using Mobipocket Creator to convert PDF for Kindle 1st gen and Kindle 2. Amazon will NOT convert PDF for free for Kindle DX; actually they won’t convert it even for a “fee” because they consider Kindle DX perfect for PDFs. But it is NOT.

The problem is Mobipocket Creator is Windows only. But luckily, after testing, I can run it under CrossOver for Mac. The version of CrossOver I am using is 8.0.1. I assume it will work on older version such as 7. How to do it? Simple. Create a bottle and install Internet Explorer 6. This is required for Mobipocket Creator to function. Then install Mobipocket Creator by “install unsupported software”. Be sure to install this into the same bottle as Internet Explorer 6. It only take a few seconds to install. Then you are done. Just drag that Mobipocket Creator.app into your Dock for faster launch. It should work as well as on Windows.

Here is a screenshot.

I will also write a short review about Kindle DX focusing on the following aspect later:
1) Chinese support
2) PDF support
3) Use it to read scientific papers
