Nobody writes a blog any more.

Now that media, mainstream or independent, move to blogging; and individuals move to sharing on Facebook and Twitter and Weibo: Nobody writes blog any more!

I always wanted to post more to this blog, but in the end I didn’t. For these reasons:

– less audience; still have to link to Facebook to share.
– less convenient. Despite WordPress being open, the usability is not on par with other products.
– the gallery option is not powerful enough: Gallery3 integration, or NextGEN gallery are usable but not great.

So I am not sure the fate of this blog. I will try to post more…

If the data is true, Americans already believe in socialism

I heard about this a while ago, but this video illustrated it well. Basically, based on a Harvard survey, Americans are way too optimistic about how the wealth is distributed in this country. This is not surprising to me, because I have long felt many Americans have an illusion that they are richer than they really are.

The video is good, but I have to point out that socialism is not equal pay across the board. Socialism, in my opinion, is actually what the “ideal chart” shown. In that sense, Americans probably already believe in socialism. But the socialism is such a demonized word in the US that the meaning is distorted. The more hard working and more value your work creates, you get paid more, but not ridiculously more. I think, if the highest paid 10% are paid 10-50X more than the lowest paid 10%, then it is still very close to a fair socialism wealth distribution, if not already socialism. Truth is, such wealth distribution will never happen if the government don’t intervene. And in a democracy, a real democracy, where people’s morality and conscience rules, the actual wealth distribution should be something similar to American ideal.

What about China, the “communist” country? In Chinese education (not sure about nowadays), socialism wealth distribution, is by amount of work you did; more pay for more work. Also, in China, socialism meant that it is a process towards communism (which is an Utopia), and poverty is first eliminated in the process. Practically, I think it should be to limit poverty rate to less than 10%, similar to unemployment rate. It is wrong for anyone with a proper job to be in poverty. And if the distribution is like “ideal”, a flat tax rate for all would also be more fair and simple.

Also, why did he single out cleaning people? Their work is low value but they can be working “hard” too.

Initial thoughts on Microsoft Surface tablet

OK. I am going to be mostly negative. But I will be subjectively negative.

First of all, there is nothing really new or stunning about this device. Maybe it is good, but it doesn’t really strike most people as stellar, I predict.

The magnetic cover is kinda a copy of an Apple’s idea. But that’s not important. I think the danger for having a keyboard like that, is that, it is not really better than a laptop keyboard, but in order to use it, you have to put the tablet as if it is a real laptop. The kickstand (ugly but practical) restrict the orientation of the tablet, and it makes this tablet MORE space hunger than a laptop: because you need extra space to support the kickstand. The real danger for having this keyboard, is that it discourage people from touching the screen. Touch is the magic with iPad. Also, you do not get adaptive keyboard with this fixed keyboard thing. Many of the neat features of iPad keyboard is that it is adaptive to the apps. Jailbroken iPad can install Chinese input method that can do so much because of this freedom. You can also not have an English and a Greek keyboard. You cannot input Emoji from it. By discouraging people from using the touch screen, you are definitely going to have a less intimate experience than the iPad, also less engaging. Sure you can remove that keyboard, but then what’s differentiating this tablet?

RT and Windows 8 Pro version is confusing as hell. There are many reasons for someone to have a Macbook Air/Pro as well as an iPad. But you will not have enough reasons to own a RT and Windows 8 version: Windows 8 version is essentially a “ultrabook”. It is going to be heavy, and power hungry and thick. I think it will eat into ultrabook PC market instead of iPad. But then it would be difficult to make your customer happy. Those who got RT will regret not having full Windows programs. And those who got Windows 8 Pro version will be unhappy because their tablet is so bulky and bad battery life. Microsoft may have created an opportunity to make their potential customers unhappy either way.

More about the keyboard thing, is it also comes with a TRACKPAD. That will further prevent people from touching. Otherwise it is a waste of space. It would be quite strange to use “cursor” in a way, although I do admit sometimes maybe a cursor is what iPad needs, but not often.

16:9 display is always strange for a tablet, once you use it in portrait mode.

I still think the Metro UI is a mess and not a fan of “tiles”.

What do I like about it? OK. The hardware itself looks good. I don’t dislike the design, it probably looks better than most Android tablets out there. I think a lot of Android tablet buyers may buy this instead. Which would be really bad news for Google. I don’t really see Android phone users having strong reasons why they would choose Android tablet over this. This product and Windows RT may just kill Android on tablet and keep it as a phone OS. I like the colors, but apparently MS is just copying Apple here.

Finally fixed my OS X Lion Spotlight and Mail full-text search

I have been suffering from mainly unable to search full-text of my emails for a couple of months. I also recently noticed that Spotlight is not searching my PDFs in my user directory. But it can find other files. I tried to fix the Mail full-text search problem numerous times, but it did not work, such as by simply reset Spotlight indexes.

Today I finally fixed it by following instructions here. Basically, you have to boot into recovery mode and open terminal, type in “resetpassword”, select your main user, and instead of changing password, select reset ACL at the bottom.

After reboot that did not immediately solve my problem. So I deleted “*” and “” from ~/Library/Preferences. Also, I tried some other commands from Terminal, which I tried before, such as hdutil -E -i off/on ~/

See detailed discussion here. Note that “on/off” above means that you turn off and then turn back on.

Anyway finally it solved my problem. I think it is a combination of a few causes. My user folder permission was definitely kind of broken. But now I am so used to Sparrow Lite email client, I am not sure whether I want to go back to

Collective Silence on Durban Climate Talk by Media?

Well, although nothing substantial has happened yet at Durban, South Africa, I think it is still worth mentioning that such an important meeting is taking place.

So I just did a search. This is what I found:

No mention of COP17 climate talk in Durban, South Africa on front page:

  • NYT, no mention even on “World”
  • Foxnews, no mention even on “World”
  • Washington Post: mentions on “World”
  • The Guardian, mentioned it on “World”
  • ABCNews, no mention even on “World”
  • Google News
  • CNN, no mention even on “World”; massive black hole makes front page
  • CBSNews, no mention even on “World”
  • NPR, but has it on “World”
  • MSNBC, no mention even on “World”

Those who mentioned it:

  • BBC
  • Huffington Post (barely)
  • Xinhuanet (Chinese, featured)
  • Zaobao (Singapore, somehow mentioned)
  • Yahoo News (two links!)
  • Bing news (1 link)
  • The Onion (related article)
  • United Nation News (of course)
  • USA Today (but basically bashing Gingrich for denying his previous support for taking actions about climate change and cap-and-trade; also make it sounds like climate change is not true)

…. Our planet is doomed.

Those who did not report about Durban climate talks, seem to prefer news that a planet presumably located in a habitable zone of another solar system is found. Ironically, I do not think we can migrate to that planet before ours is destroyed.

Also, I think that it seems Africa is going to be hit very hard by climate change. But that is basically off most people’s radar.

Adjusting GD setting in Gallery3 to reduce noise and sharpness

I am going back to Gallery3 to host my own picture gallery online. Now with Facebook integration, I think it is the way to go again. And I have better control over the picture size etc.

But after installing and adjusting the settings, I notice the pictures turned out to be quite noisy on Gallery3. So I dig around and found a way to fix it by adjusting GD.php to reduce the amount of sharpen GD does to the resized images. Now the pictures look similar to Flickr.

Main part is to change this file:

// Amount should be in the range of 26-10
$amount = round(abs(-26 + ($amount * 0.16)), 2);

attached a screenshot of the original article.

HTC Android security issue

It is pretty bad. Especially the lack of software updates. Is Google going to close the OS? Obviously a lot of handset makers do not have enough expertise to maintain the modified OS and provide updates.

Here is the analysis, from

This is pretty bad.

One of Android’s biggest problems is the lack of OS updates after each device is sold, since both the manufacturer and the carrier need to approve each update, and neither of them care much about dumping money into enhancing “old” phones.

In addition to the long-term customer satisfaction issues this causes,1 it’s also a potentially huge security risk: if a serious vulnerability is discovered in a released version of Android and Google issues a patch, vast numbers of phones in the marketplace might stay unpatched for weeks, months, or the rest of their service lifetimes.2

In this case, the problem is in HTC’s code, not Google’s. That’s probably worse: HTC is a hardware company that barely makes software, so they’re unlikely to have any mature process in place to create and deploy security patches quickly, and they’re unlikely to care about it as much as Google would.

This must bother Google immensely, and it’s probably one more reason why they want to (and should) “close” Android, prevent manufacturers and carriers from mucking around with low-level services, and take control of updates and deployment.

For the remaining Android customers whose long-term satisfaction hasn’t already been burned by poor battery life. ↩

Google narrowly dodged this fate with a less-severe issue by issuing a server-side fix, but very few vulnerabilities can be fixed that way. ↩

Metro UI

1. “regarding Windows Phone ’07, Apple offers “a better-designed UI that doesn’t continuously destroy users’ visual memory.”

2. The sameness made it impossible to find anything. Why anyone would revert to vague and homogeneous tiles from highly identifiable icons is beyond my comprehension. Perhaps someone thinks it’s more artsy.”

3. “People sense something is wrong. The miserable sales of the Phone 7 products reflect the user sensitivity,” Dvorak writes. “So what does Microsoft do? It pushes the same bad idea to the new OS. Win 8 will be a
huge disappointment if Microsoft insists that these metro tiles are a good idea.”

“When you look at your desktop screen, how do you find the program you are looking for? You look for distinctive icons using your human ability to recognize patterns. It’s what we do best,” Dvorak writes. “We are so good
at this that we can identify an upside down icon. Mac takes the icon approach to interesting and useful extremes. Even document icons are miniature and identifiable shrunken images of the title page. This is extremely useful.”

This explains everything.

An article on Rolling Stone magazine talking about Michele Bachmann, an evangelist congresswoman who just announced here president candidacy, explained perhaps the biggest mystery about elections in American.

Snickering readers in New York or Los Angeles might be tempted by all of this to conclude that Bachmann is uniquely crazy. But in fact, such tales by Bachmann work precisely because there are a great many people in America just like Bachmann, people who believe that God tells them what condiments to put on their hamburgers, who can’t tell the difference between Soviet Communism and a Stafford loan, but can certainly tell the difference between being mocked and being taken seriously. When you laugh at Michele Bachmann for going on MSNBC and blurting out that the moon is made of red communist cheese, these people don’t learn that she is wrong. What they learn is that you’re a dick, that they hate you more than ever, and that they’re even more determined now to support anyone who promises not to laugh at their own visions and fantasies.

The complete article is here but it is very long.

Part 1
