Why Apple’s Universal Binary is kind of a bad idea

Universal BinaryApple is right about universal binary that can run on both PowerPC and Intel chips. But the way they are distributing universal binary is a very bad idea. Why? Because… when user download softwares, they are mostly using them either on a PowerPC or a Intel machine. So why do users need “Universal” binary on a non-universal machine? No, at least I will not need one.

So for me, the best thing to do is to release PowerPC only and Intel only binaries at the same time, as seperate download. Becasue I believe many users will never want their software to be so fat which is totally waste of hard drive space.

Right now, you can use Monolingual to get rid of language files you will never use, and also the support of the architecture that you do not need. The bad thing about this software right now is that you can not tell it which software you want it to work on; it will just scan your whole system. You can save a whole lot of hard drive space by running this software. However, there is no turning back once those files are deleted. So think twice what you are doing.
